Description

The number three plays a prominent role in Jewish tradition. The following are some traditional Jewish suggestions inspired by the number three.

1. Every person has three friends: one’s children, one’s possessions, and one’s good deeds. (Pirke de Rabbi Elazar, p. 34)

2. There are three wrongs before which the heavenly curtain is never closed: cheating, robbery, and idolatry. (Talmud Baba Metzia 59a)

3. Three things come unawares: the Messiah, something found, and a scorpion. (Talmud Sanhedrin 97a) .

4. Three things will deplete a person’s strength: fear, travel, and sin. (Talmud Gittin 70a)

5. Three things will remove a person’s reason and belief in one’s Creator: idolatry, an evil spirit, and the tribulation of poverty. (Talmud Eruvin 41b)

6. Three things are severe threats to one’s body: heart disease, bowel disease, and an empty purse. An empty purse is even a greater threat than the preceding two. (Midrash, Ecclesiastes 7:26)

7. Three things cancel an evil decree: prayer, charity, and repentance. (Jerusalem Talmud, Taanit 5:1)

8. The Holy One loves these three: one who never succumbs to anger, one who does not get intoxicated, and one who does not insist on his full rights. (Talmud Pesachim 113b)

9. There are three whose life is not a life: one who has to rely on one’s neighbor’s table, one whose wife rules over him, and one whose body is afflicted with suffering. (Talmud Betzah 32b)

10. There are three crowns: the crown of Torah, the crown of priesthood, and the crown of royalty. But the crown of a good name surpasses them all. (Ethics of the Fathers 4:13)

11. Three things restore a person’s spirit: beautiful sounds, sights, and fragrances. (Talmud Berachot 57b)

12. The world stands on three things: Torah, worship, and loving-kindness. (Ethics of the Fathers 1:2)

The number four is one of the most prominent numbers in all of Jewish tradition. It is especially prominent at Passover. Four questions are asked at the Seder, and there are four sons and four cups of wine. Here is some additional Jewish advice suggested by the number four.
